<span style="text-align: left;">I like to change things up. I get bored with the same ole same ole. I also love art and photographs, and I love making art and photographs. You can never have enough pictures because they really are worth a thousand words and they really do capture precious memories perfectly. We have so many pictures and a long wall in our living room with nothing on it. I didn't want to put a hundred nails in </span><span style="text-align: left;">the wall because it just felt too permanent and I wouldn't be able to switch them out easily. </span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
Solution: Gallery Shelves! </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The pre-made ones are so expensive, like $30-$60 a piece, and they are really short. I wanted some that were the entire length of the wall. The supply list for this project is small. We used 1x4's for the bottom and back, stop molding on the front, and angle brackets for strength. I was in between painting them or staining them. But I decided to paint them the same color as our walls for a clean, blended look. </div>

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;"><br /></td></tr>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
I love that Eli has the bottom shelf for all his books! We also hung a t.v. in the middle shelf and I put pictures around it. I like that its not the focal point of the room.</div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
They are such a fun way to easily change things around, add new art, books, pictures, keepsakes, etc. If you have a long wall in your house that you don't know what to do with, this is a beautiful way to fill the space! </div>

Wow! It's been a minute...but I'm back! Life has been so busy and so good! We have had many many changes here, including projects and more importantly, a growing family! We proudly welcomed our son into the world October of 2014 and life has not slowed down since. <3<br />
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
There are a lot of fun projects I'm going to post about soon, in the next coming days/weeks, but I just wanted to drop in and say "hello!". It feels good to be back and get these creative juices flowing again!!! </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
You'll start to see some changes here, like my new page, "Remedy". It talks a little bit about my journey with Young Living Essential Oils, check it out. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Okay, be back soon y'all! </div>

We just went from one giant construction project to the next
here without really taking a minute to breathe. From the screen porch to
starting the laundry room, we really are starting to make this house our home.
It’s amazing to see the imprint previous owners have made on this house and how
we are molding it to fit our desires. The house never had a laundry room; which
is hard to believe this day and age, but I guess in the 1960’s it wasn’t a
desirable room to have like it is now. </div>

We have a double car garage and two closets off the garage.
Both of them are a good size and share the same wall as the screen porch. The
closet nearest shares a wall with the kitchen and is where the washer and dryer
are. The door from the garage goes into the kitchen and this entrance is used
more than the front door. Also that door into the kitchen is right in the
middle of the wall, so there’s no space for a kitchen table; making one whole
corner of the kitchen completely wasted space. We use to have a chair in that
corner. The most exciting and best solution for having a laundry/mudroom
in the house and making the kitchen space more usable was to open up the closet
to the kitchen and finish it out. Here are some pictures of what the kitchen
and closet off the garage looked like before: </div>

rope will go through the 5/4"x6" decking boards and down through the post for secured support. </div>

Now on to the fun part! In order to hang the bed from
our ceiling, since it’s recessed in the rafters, we used two 4x4’s to go in
between the rafter beams and secured those with really long screws, like 8”
long, from the other side of the beam all the way through the 4x4.This thing
isn’t going anywhere and my engineer assured me it could hold close to a ton. Then
loop the rope over the 4x4 in the ceiling and tie a knot, then thread it down
through the drilled holes and tie a knot at the bottom, do this on all four
sides… and here it is hanging! </div>

I wanted a chandelier to hang over the <a href="http://theyellowfern.blogspot.com/2012/11/kitchen-table-makeover.html" target="_blank">paisley table</a> on the screen porch and knew that this would be perfect to transform into a candle chandelier. Ryan took out all the wiring and since it was two tiers it was a little longer than necessary. So, he unthreaded all the separate brass pieces and we were able to “re-build” it by just threading back on the pieces I wanted to keep. It made it shorter and put the two tiers closer together. I wanted to do this for functionality reasons too since I would be putting real candlesticks in it, I didn’t want one candles flame right under another candle, thus the end result probably being a melting candle hot wax mess. A hot mess. The chandelier had faux candle sticks in it and once they were removed with all the wiring, it was the perfect size to put a candle stick or tealight down in…it even has a rim for drips. Perfect!<u></u><u></u></div>

long time ago my dear friend, Alaina, over at <a href="http://recycledinteriors.blogspot.com/?spref=fb" target="_blank">Recycled Interiors</a>, gave me
this vintage, yellow, glass dish and I love it! I wasn’t quite sure
what to do with it though...I had it on my kitchen counter for a while
but felt like it could have so much more potential somewhere else. It
just seemed to be over looked. </div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
For
some reason, one day when we were at Goodwill (how most of our stories
start out…), I got on this kick about silverware. They had a plastic bin
full of knives, spoons, forks..all for like 10 cents each. I just
couldn’t get over it and thought, there’s got to be something cool I can
do with all this decorative silver. So I bought a bag full of knives
and spoons. I left them in the garage for a while not having a clue what
I was going to do with all of them and then a creative spark fired off
in my brain! I could bend them and make a frame to hold the glass dish
for a bird bath! </div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
I picked out
some of the prettier knives...</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">

...and bent them all at the same place/angle
with a clamp and hammer and the help of my husbands muscles. Definitely wear hearing protection-it got very
loud. I measured the circumference of the dish so I would know where to
bend my knives so that the dish would fit in snug. </div>

Then in the
“blade” part of the knife, Ryan drilled a hole in all 6 knives at the
same spot. After that we threaded a bolt through them to hold them all
together. We had a hollow silver metal pole laying in the garage that
already had a female end in it (Ryan used a size bolt that would thread
into it). We cut off the pole at about 3.5 feet and I spray painted it
black. Then we threaded the bolt with all the knives onto the pole. After that it was ready to be stuck in the ground. </div>

I don’t know how to knit, even though I would love
to learn how I haven’t taken the time to learn, so I resulted in plan B
for making a cowl (an endless scarf). Plan B=sewing! If you are a
beginner seamstress like me, then you will love this project. It’s easy
and the end result is fashionably fabulous! I chose to use two different
types of fabrics to make it a little more interesting, so I went with a
gray cotton knit and lace. The cotton knit is super soft and comfy. </div>
<div class="MsoNormal">

What you need:</div>

the “gray” fabric (the fabric you want to use more of) out on a flat
surface and cut it in strips. My strips were 4’6’’ long by 18’’ wide. I
know it’s a little odd of a number, but I gave myself a couple inches
of breathing room for sewing so I would have enough room for a hem.
(When the cotton knit fabric is cut, the edges tend to roll a little…at
first I thought it would be a problem but it actually ended up helping
me keep a straight stitch along the edge.)<br />

Our home has two front doors, which is a little
odd, but that’s just one of the many cute little quirks of owning an old
house. One of the front doors is the obvious, main front door that goes
into the foyer. The other door is off the den where our fireplace is.
(Neither of these doors get used as front doors-everyone comes in the
garage and back door. That’s okay, that just means we have great close
friends and family!) The sole purpose of our den front door is to store
firewood for the fireplace. It’s so convenient to open it up and be able
to grab a couple of logs sitting right there. The front door opens up
onto a little covered front porch area, so the wood stays dry as well.
The only thing is the neat stack of firewood very quickly becomes a
disheveled pile of wood and bark that looks messy from the street, not
to mention the mess that gets tracked into the house. (There's usually more wood than this but we just had a fire..seeing that it's still snowing!! <sigh>)</div>

Ryan’s
idea and fix? Weld up a firewood rack of course! We bought a ton of
scaffolding off Craigslist to build the porch and have several odd
pieces left over, which is what Ryan used to make it. Here are the two
pieces of scaffolding that he used. </div>

Trash to treasure…since Ryan has recently gotten into welding I should
start a section called reclaimed metal…</div>
He
cut some pieces out of the middle, then he welded it all together
basically making a regtangular frame…<insert magic sparks flying
here> . He flipped it over so it has legs and isn’t sitting on the
ground; which will be ideal for keeping bugs and things from getting
under the wood. The only input I had in this was to spray paint it a
flat black to make it look more finished. And here it is:<br />

<b>Cable
railings</b>-We didn’t want to do wood railings/spindles because it would
block our view…we got a little creative (surprise surprise) and decided
to do cable railings. (We ran it by the inspector and he liked the
unique idea and passed it!) Boy, were we relieved! We have two cables
running between each support beam (one at one foot and one at 3 feet)
and Ryan tied them off with turnbuckles. The turnbuckles match the ones
that are across the ceiling for the cross-ties. It looks really neat and
we didn’t lose any of our view. The cables blend in with the background
and you hardly notice them! </div>

<b>Railing-</b> At first we thought we wanted a wrought iron railing for the stairs and we found one on craigslist. But it didn't work out so well. Ryan ended up building a railing and it looks fantastic. He built them out of metal pipes, cut and welded them together and then spray painted it a flat black. They match perfectly with the style of the rest of the porch. <br />

<b>Stone work-</b> We had to build stone steps on both sides of the porch and a landing on one side. Ryan has become very talented with stone-masonry and has recently taught me. It's actually pretty fun!<br />

started getting ready to paint…because it really was BAD and I just didn’t
think about it. Besides the bed being in there, it wasn’t a usable space at all
due to the amount of boxes stacked high to the ceiling and across the floor. <br />
Here are a couple of pictures I took before I started
painting:<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-5bnt9i3ehYk/UN9i6wOP4II/AAAAAAAAAXA/3KGgn7c4Cng/s1600/IMG_0236.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-5bnt9i3ehYk/UN9i6wOP4II/AAAAAAAAAXA/3KGgn7c4Cng/s320/IMG_0236.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>

<br />
The walls were a light pinky color and the ceiling, doors
and trim were a semi-gloss and stained yellow. The trim and baseboards were
white (at one time) and the window casings were brown. Not to mention all the
baseboards were cracked or chipped and needed to be replaced. There was also a
hole in the sheetrock that needed attention... Boy did I have my work cut out
for me!<br />
<br />
I started painting the ceiling first-I just did Ceiling
White-Flat. Then I started on the walls…trim…windows..doors. I used Sherwin
Williams, Nomadic Desert on the walls and for the doors, windows, and trim I
used Sherwin Williams-Shell White, semi-gloss.<br />

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Swatch of Nomadic Desert </td></tr>

We bought new wide baseboards and I LOVE THEM! I want so
badly to do the rest of my house like that…but it would cost a small fortune.
One room at a time!<br />

Now the room serves as a guest bedroom and more importantly
my craft room! I have a nice big desk and armoire that holds all my craft
stuff, sewing machine, etc. I made another (large) chalkboard frame to go over
the desk.<br />

that only leaves ONE more room left to paint (our bedroom)-yippee!!! I have to admit this is the first time I have ever
straight up copied a project from another person…but I liked the idea SO
much and the final outcome of the project was so awesome I just
couldn’t help it! (Well, there are SOME things I did a little
differently. ) I wanted to have a table for the screen porch where we
could eat out there, play games, etc. and I was looking for something
that would seat 6-8 people. After much searching for just the right
table, I found this one on Craigslist. It’s just what I was looking
for…patience is a virtue! It has a leaf that is attached and folds up
underneath the table, so it’s easy to use if we need to accommodate for a
bigger crowd. </div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<b><br /></b></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="MsoNormal">
The
table was pretty beat up, I mean…well loved by a lot of kids…Parts
gouged out by a pencil, colorful magic marker drawings and the gloss
finish was slowly chipping away. Exactly what I wanted! My dear friend,
Ann, is so sweet and brings me her “Better Homes and Garden” magazines
to flip thru and I just so happened to find a teeny tiny little coupon
on one of the pages for 25% off a stencil from: <a href="http://www.cuttingedgestencils.com/" target="_blank">Cutting Edge Stencils .</a> </div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
It
was so ironic b/c that’s the same website the other girl got her
stencil from. I looked at all the stencils, trying not to copy this girl
to a “T”, but turns out the Paisley stencil was my favorite one too…
it’s just so darn cute! And the stencil is awesome, no bleeds, easy to
clean, I was very pleased! </div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
First
to prep the table I sanded it down and took all the original finish off
the top of it. Then I wiped it down to get the wood dust off. </div>
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-cMztJA9k3R0/ULFJxfyvF5I/AAAAAAAAAT8/PfMsVtQhDPY/s1600/IMG_0033.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-cMztJA9k3R0/ULFJxfyvF5I/AAAAAAAAAT8/PfMsVtQhDPY/s320/IMG_0033.JPG" width="240" /></a></td></tr>

<div class="MsoNormal">
And it was
ready to stencil, that easy! I use white latex outdoor paint and a mini
roller-I didn’t use a foam roller because they tend to hold more paint
and I didn’t want it to bleed under the stencil. You don’t have to press
down too hard…just a light pressure and I did 2 coats. I layed the
stencil in the middle of the table to get started and then I went out
from there. </div>

<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
One mistake I made was turning my stencil because I thought
it would look neat not to have a “repetitive pattern” welllllll they are
smart and made the stencil to line up and look never-ending..so don’t
turn your stencil! Just keep painting, just keep painting...<span style="font-family: Wingdings;"></span>
(let it dry, takes about 2 min to dry) and then line it up and paint
the next section. Since I turned my stencil, it obviously wouldn’t line
up so I had to wait for it to dry and then sand the paint off. Not too

dark since the wood was sanded down to the raw, so I’m glad I didn’t go
with my Kona stain. Make sure you wear latex gloves-staining can get
messy and have an old rag to wipe the stain off. I did two coats of stain because I wanted it a little darker in some places.</div>

It’s probably been the easiest project I have done so far and I’m
SO happy with how it turned out!<br />

getting pretty close to being finished. There are just a lot of little details
to finish out the project.<span> </span>We got all
the gutters up a couple weeks ago and installed my rain chain! It replaces the
downspout, so when it rains the little cups fill up with water and the water
flows down to the next one. Making a really pretty trickling noise and it looks
kinda like a waterfall. We needed to somehow direct the rain away from the
house once it trickled down the chain. I knew I wanted a really big clay pot
and as always, my ever impressive engineer husband devised a plan. <br />
<span> </span>So, we went to a
nursery where they have a TON of different huge clay pots. There were so many
to choose from and they were all so neat but we chose the prettiest, tallest
one. I just love the colors! (it's kinda dirty here but it's teal dripped into dark blue) <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/--lpuzdiL5oM/UJ2FzIWuGpI/AAAAAAAAATQ/Z1SO9ruLQDI/s1600/IMG_0062.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/--lpuzdiL5oM/UJ2FzIWuGpI/AAAAAAAAATQ/Z1SO9ruLQDI/s320/IMG_0062.JPG" width="240" /></a></div>
Any who, Ryan made an incognito French drain out of the clay
pot and cut a hole about 3 inches in diameter in the bottom. Then he poured a
small concrete slab for the pot to sit on and for the drain pipe to come up
through.<span> </span>He layed PVC pipe in the ground
and it goes from the concrete slab to the backside of our stone
retaining wall.
So all the water trickles down the rain chain, into the clay pot, down
the
drain and under/out the other side of the wall. We also got some wire
mesh and put it down in the pot to catch leaves and debris. That way the
drain doesn't get clogged up from our thousands of acorns and leaves
that fall. By looking at it you would
never know..it just looks like a chain and a clay pot! <br />
<br />
Eventually we are going to plant a nice little garden around
it. But here it is...<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
In our kitchen we have a fireplace with a long brick wall and I needed something to break up the space. Big chalkboards are so much fun and I thought it would be great for the kitchen to write notes on. I found this old dresser mirror at Goodwill for $10 and figured I could do something with it, plus I loved the size of it.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-__3uAVkSeiw/T_zc4LufpOI/AAAAAAAAAHg/E_P-aeiz5_8/s1600/photo+1.JPG" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="256" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-__3uAVkSeiw/T_zc4LufpOI/AAAAAAAAAHg/E_P-aeiz5_8/s320/photo+1.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
I took the mirror out and flipped it over. So I painted the chalkboard paint on the backside of the mirror (if I ever want to use the mirror side as a mirror I can). Before painting the frame I had to sand it to get the finish off, so the paint would stick/not scratch off. First I painted the mirror blue (with a paint sample I already had)...<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-pT7sQyX8kaM/T_zdzERfFXI/AAAAAAAAAHo/54OQL2zGtpw/s1600/photo+3.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="256" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-pT7sQyX8kaM/T_zdzERfFXI/AAAAAAAAAHo/54OQL2zGtpw/s320/photo+3.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-o3H5j7bQ5kg/T_2OKXSOyxI/AAAAAAAAAIc/mPul1hbZENs/s1600/rustoleum.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><br /></a></div>
But I didn't like the way the blue looked in the kitchen at all. I have a lot of earthy tones in there, green, burnt orange, red, etc...so I decided to paint the mirror green. On the left is the mirror painted with chalkboard paint. It took two coats to really cover it well. This is the chalkboard paint I used and it's great quality:<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-o3H5j7bQ5kg/T_2OKXSOyxI/AAAAAAAAAIc/mPul1hbZENs/s1600/rustoleum.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="200" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-o3H5j7bQ5kg/T_2OKXSOyxI/AAAAAAAAAIc/mPul1hbZENs/s200/rustoleum.jpg" width="200" /></a></div>
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-o3H5j7bQ5kg/T_2OKXSOyxI/AAAAAAAAAIc/mPul1hbZENs/s1600/rustoleum.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"> </a><br />
<br />
...and here it is finished and hanging :) It breaks up the brick wall and it's so fun to write on too! (I think my husband has written on it more than I have!) <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

She still uses the dining room table, but the hutch was down in the basement. With her permission of course, I gave it a little makeover! <br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
Here is the hutch before: </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-90ww0vk6uDc/T_ojMbY0hXI/AAAAAAAAAGM/q5pJMwcKNSk/s1600/IMG_0436.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-90ww0vk6uDc/T_ojMbY0hXI/AAAAAAAAAGM/q5pJMwcKNSk/s320/IMG_0436.JPG" width="240" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/--NxHxjSLMq8/T_ojNpH2aTI/AAAAAAAAAGU/oN6j8bVhz-I/s1600/IMG_0437.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/--NxHxjSLMq8/T_ojNpH2aTI/AAAAAAAAAGU/oN6j8bVhz-I/s320/IMG_0437.JPG" width="240" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
The hutch was definitely used and well loved, it had a couple of places that were chipped (you can kinda see on the front corner in the picture above) and the legs were a little scratched up. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
The two pieces are separate, so I took them apart and primed both of them (instead of sanding). I used Kilz odorless primer. The vinyl strip came off the front, so we filled it in the wood filler. Same with all the chips on the both pieces. After the wood filler dried (the next day) I sanded it down to smooth it out/make it even with the rest of the wood.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-MPegvMJUnsI/T_omC4Hh_iI/AAAAAAAAAGk/mjTt5-b9DcE/s1600/IMG_0011.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-MPegvMJUnsI/T_omC4Hh_iI/AAAAAAAAAGk/mjTt5-b9DcE/s320/IMG_0011.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-323pDeKcKEg/T_omD2oPumI/AAAAAAAAAGs/Ih_a4Z37dwA/s1600/IMG_0012.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-323pDeKcKEg/T_omD2oPumI/AAAAAAAAAGs/Ih_a4Z37dwA/s320/IMG_0012.JPG" width="320" /> </a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
After priming, I painted both pieces white and the back of the shelves/sides of the drawers teal. The white I used was: Ace Essence, Satin, Casablanca</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
The teal I used was: Clark and Kensington, Turquoise Bay</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
and here it is all finished! </div>

Dad found the leftover scraps when he was cleaning out his workroom and of course, Ryan and I snatched them up!<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">some of the left over pieces </td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<div style="text-align: center;">
We wanted to make a doormat, something like this:</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-yrbBmzKyniE/T7_JGEieu7I/AAAAAAAAAFE/U-2XoBVaR5A/s1600/2010-01-HDA-door-Mat-056-copy.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="212" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-yrbBmzKyniE/T7_JGEieu7I/AAAAAAAAAFE/U-2XoBVaR5A/s320/2010-01-HDA-door-Mat-056-copy.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
This one was made with rope and we soon realized that since there's no rigidity in rope it would pinch our little feet-sies. (One thing you should know about us, we are almost always barefoot. I for one, don't like to wear shoes if I can help it.) My husband, being the problem solver he is, never ceases to amaze me and came up with using cable instead. We bought 10 feet of thin cable from Ace Hardware. <br />
<br />
First we cut the scraps of wood all to the same length and then stained them using Minwax, Kona. (We had stain left over from the Crate Shelves project.) Ryan drilled holes all the way through the sides of each slat of wood and through the top, fed the cable through, knotting it each time he passed it through the hole.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-ADITQb8M1jM/T7_bmiOjgoI/AAAAAAAAAFo/XrOi2CR_Oao/s1600/IMG_0005.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-ADITQb8M1jM/T7_bmiOjgoI/AAAAAAAAAFo/XrOi2CR_Oao/s320/IMG_0005.JPG" width="240" /></a></div>
<br />
Then he would pull back on the wire so the knot would fit/sit tightly in the hole, and so on...until all the boards were threaded. This was no easy task, it took him a while to master how to tie the perfect tight knot and measure it out between each board.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-oMZvvJZdkFc/T7_bfj7GpLI/AAAAAAAAAFY/d_A6SLzpiJM/s1600/IMG_0003.JPG" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-oMZvvJZdkFc/T7_bfj7GpLI/AAAAAAAAAFY/d_A6SLzpiJM/s320/IMG_0003.JPG" width="240" /></a></div>
<br />
The scraps of wood were enough to make two door mats and we gave one do our dear friends Rob and Alaina. Check her blog out sometime: <a href="http://recycledinteriors.blogspot.com/" target="_blank">http://recycledinteriors.blogspot.com</a>.<br />
<br />
Anyways, this is how they turned out! We love how the shiny cable looks against the dark wood.<br />

Hey y'all! Ryan and I have really gotten into this re-claimed wood thing and are having so much fun with it. It's amazing what you can make out of something that looks unsalvageable. We were out kayaking on the river and found a piece of a dock that floated away and been abandoned for a long time and I thought it would make the coolest coffee table. Ryan was on board (get it?) and the salvaging began! Getting is home was the tricky part b/c it was SO heavy and hard to tow...but we managed! <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-1C-SO6j-32U/T7WCsBsNEoI/AAAAAAAAAEE/6ZW3q60Y3WQ/s1600/IMG_0384.JPG" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-1C-SO6j-32U/T7WCsBsNEoI/AAAAAAAAAEE/6ZW3q60Y3WQ/s320/IMG_0384.JPG" width="320" /> </a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
We got it home and had to take out all the icky styrofoam which was growing trees in it! </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-KVcc2bifBhw/T7WDonh0kUI/AAAAAAAAAEM/w3VCdjRlj0g/s1600/IMG_0388.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-KVcc2bifBhw/T7WDonh0kUI/AAAAAAAAAEM/w3VCdjRlj0g/s320/IMG_0388.JPG" width="240" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
We took all the boards off the top to get rid of the rusty bolts and cut off the bottom steel to give it legs. Then used a wire wheel to clean the steel (it too was covered in gunk and rust). To finish off the steel frame we sprayed a clear coat of Rust-oleum Crystal Clear Enamel. And sanded the boards down to get rid of all the splinters. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-G1ZckuwPkQs/T7WELKmtRRI/AAAAAAAAAEU/8zdtUyI6nkA/s1600/IMG_0431.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-G1ZckuwPkQs/T7WELKmtRRI/AAAAAAAAAEU/8zdtUyI6nkA/s320/IMG_0431.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
We re-stained the wood with a coat of semi-transparent wood stain for $5. (at Ace Hardware, in their paint section, they have clearance cans of paint and stains that's been returned mainly b/c people didn't like the color). Ryan added some stainless steel feet with rubber stoppers so the steel frame wouldn't scratch up the stone.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
...and
here it is done! </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
now we have an awesome, functional outdoor coffee table/bench that is
pretty much in-destructible!<b> </b></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<b>Total cost of project: </b>$19 </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">

<div style="text-align: center;">
$4 Rust-oleum Crystal Clear Enamel</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">

We have a fireplace in our kitchen, so I wanted to create a reading nook. In the previous post, we made the stump table to go next to the comfy overstuffed chair in the kitchen and the nook was started! I wanted a book shelf for the empty wall on the right side and I love this look:<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-RiPOS97Ghnw/T6r-hRwBWjI/AAAAAAAAACg/gHCxkN55bTo/s1600/vintage+crate+2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-RiPOS97Ghnw/T6r-hRwBWjI/AAAAAAAAACg/gHCxkN55bTo/s320/vintage+crate+2.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
To buy these shelves made are really expensive and I saw similar posts on other blogs where they made them out of crates premade from JoAnns. This too is expensive b/c the crates are $12 a pop, cheap balsa-type wood, poorly made and small. So it's a lot of money for not good quality.<br />
<br />
So what do the hubs and I decide? Make them ourselves from old wood, of course! We went on a search for palettes for a couple of weeks and found these baby's!<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-Lxtb3Rc0UB4/T6r_8fhyJHI/AAAAAAAAACo/Rzx8UeFPDWA/s1600/IMG_0314.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-Lxtb3Rc0UB4/T6r_8fhyJHI/AAAAAAAAACo/Rzx8UeFPDWA/s320/IMG_0314.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
A whole truck load of palettes! Jack pot! They were well worn and had lots of nails. We took them all apart and took the nails out. They left behind rusty nail holes which gave the wood a neat rustic look. So now we have a pile of long pieces of wood.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-PFmgbY6gqqc/T6sBT-v89fI/AAAAAAAAACw/VAVG1fZ0d-8/s1600/IMG_0321.JPG" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="157" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-PFmgbY6gqqc/T6sBT-v89fI/AAAAAAAAACw/VAVG1fZ0d-8/s320/IMG_0321.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
We made the crates two different sizes so they would stack evenly and we would be able to mix match some vertical and some horizontal. Instead of all the crates being horizontal like the picture above. Ryan figured up a cut list and started cutting away...<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<img border="0" height="200" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-TrwjLxEgCU0/T6sCbkiGvhI/AAAAAAAAAC4/f-t0WGNilfQ/s200/IMG_0324.JPG" width="185" /> </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
As he was cutting, I started staining. We chose Kona by Minwax. It was A LOT of wood to stain. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-MXvgBmujHH8/T6sDMzb79jI/AAAAAAAAADA/ZBW2YhBrB2E/s1600/IMG_0322.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="150" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-MXvgBmujHH8/T6sDMzb79jI/AAAAAAAAADA/ZBW2YhBrB2E/s200/IMG_0322.JPG" width="200" /> </a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
The only wood we had to buy was for the ends of the crates. We bought three 1x12's. And here's all the wood laying out to dry after staining and one crate made.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-NOSvdUncMvw/T6sDwF1BICI/AAAAAAAAADI/Yn2hshihupg/s1600/IMG_0326.JPG" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-NOSvdUncMvw/T6sDwF1BICI/AAAAAAAAADI/Yn2hshihupg/s320/IMG_0326.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Now for the fun part! Assembling the rest of the crates: one vertical and one horizontal done.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-KsU0AEWgK-w/T6sEg3aPZmI/AAAAAAAAADQ/HGEUxdApQXk/s1600/IMG_0328.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-KsU0AEWgK-w/T6sEg3aPZmI/AAAAAAAAADQ/HGEUxdApQXk/s320/IMG_0328.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
and 13 crates later...we are done!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-BCbhuawkCpY/T6sE8IkcmLI/AAAAAAAAADY/L_n1jf5u_7w/s1600/IMG_0331.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-BCbhuawkCpY/T6sE8IkcmLI/AAAAAAAAADY/L_n1jf5u_7w/s320/IMG_0331.JPG" width="240" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
The only thing left to do is screw them together to secure them and bring it in the house to decorate! </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
And here it is: </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-kBQznhqliVw/T6sMRU4ryAI/AAAAAAAAADk/ld2FeWBtqiA/s1600/IMG_0003.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-kBQznhqliVw/T6sMRU4ryAI/AAAAAAAAADk/ld2FeWBtqiA/s320/IMG_0003.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
We love them and I'm constantly re-arranging them for a different look. It's a great place for cook books, books, keys and little treasures!<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-NuGiDVimfIU/T6sV7-XQSWI/AAAAAAAAAD4/0h4-Cn1U6Tc/s1600/IMG_0010.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-NuGiDVimfIU/T6sV7-XQSWI/AAAAAAAAAD4/0h4-Cn1U6Tc/s320/IMG_0010.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
And a close up: <b> </b></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<b>Total cost:</b> around $50 for stain and 3 pieces of wood! </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
What do y'all think?</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

</div>
<div style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;">
</div>
<br />
Boy, do I have a lot of catching up to do. The first piece of
furniture we made was a Tree Stump table. We were only in our house for
about a month when a giant Oak came crashing down on our little
bungalow, causing a huge mess! One good thing that came out of it was a
ton of stump options to make my table. (Ironically I wanted to make one
of these before the tree incident) and I was inspired by something like
this:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-kF85HxY552g/T6mxIIcEyYI/AAAAAAAAAAo/lhVFHntMSBU/s1600/stump-3.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-kF85HxY552g/T6mxIIcEyYI/AAAAAAAAAAo/lhVFHntMSBU/s320/stump-3.png" width="212" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
After
much searching and chainsaw cutting I found the perfect section of tree
trunk. First we had to let the trunk completely dry out to get rid of
all the moisture and bugs. This took about 3 months under a covered
area. After much waiting and anticipation the fun began.<br />
<br />
I chipped off all the bark with an ax and hammer:<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-zM0aQe9GIuo/T6m1J3I6nbI/AAAAAAAAAA0/Btngcfoyxyc/s1600/IMG_0315.JPG" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-zM0aQe9GIuo/T6m1J3I6nbI/AAAAAAAAAA0/Btngcfoyxyc/s320/IMG_0315.JPG" width="240" /></a></div>
and
then sanded it forever. Hand sanding the sides, starting with a lower
grit and working up to a finer one. Then to get rid of the chainsaw
marks on top, I used a hand sander.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-p9Db7DCLofw/T6m3gpw3mVI/AAAAAAAAAA8/7B80watZmQ0/s1600/IMG_0319.JPG" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-p9Db7DCLofw/T6m3gpw3mVI/AAAAAAAAAA8/7B80watZmQ0/s320/IMG_0319.JPG" width="240" /></a></div>
<br />
After
the sanding was done I wiped it down with a damp cloth to get rid of
all the dust. Then comes the stain! I chose "All American" by Minwax.
Two coats later it was ready to be finished off with a couple coats of
poly-urethane. We chose Minwax in a semi-gloss. This took a while,
because the polyurethane needs a couple days to dry between coats. Then
it was ready to bring in the house! and here's the finished table:<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-qTSS9J7c_W0/T6m87zF-ZVI/AAAAAAAAABI/_nmVHtRSaaY/s1600/IMG_0442.JPG" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-qTSS9J7c_W0/T6m87zF-ZVI/AAAAAAAAABI/_nmVHtRSaaY/s320/IMG_0442.JPG" width="240" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Add a cactus and a mason jar of sea shells and it's the perfect little table for our (in progress) reading corner.<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-DCchJr7vH1g/T6m8_9jSu1I/AAAAAAAAABQ/GxtSPt5HVBE/s1600/IMG_0445.JPG" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><br /><img border="0" height="320" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-DCchJr7vH1g/T6m8_9jSu1I/AAAAAAAAABQ/GxtSPt5HVBE/s320/IMG_0445.JPG" width="240" /></a></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
Voila! <b>Total cost: </b>$15 for stain and polyurethane </div>Laurenhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12426977947578232421noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1832921651452465635.post-58707295315655985472012-05-08T14:50:00.000-07:002012-05-08T14:50:14.735-07:00Hey y'all!
